HUNTLEY, Mont. (Aug. 16, 2011) – Huntley and Worden Volunteer Fire Departments are asking the public to help fill their boots with spare change for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Firefighters will be collecting spare change on Northern Avenue in downtown Huntley on Saturday, Aug. 20 starting at 9 a.m.
Fill the Boot funds will be used to benefit more than 500 families in Montana served by MDA. Donations are used to fund clinic visits, support groups, repairs on braces and wheelchairs, and MDA summer camp in Seeley Lake.
Committed to ending neuromuscular diseases, firefighters are a longtime friend and supporter of MDA. The Fill the Boot tradition began in 1952 when 20 Boston firefighters did a door to door canister drive to raise money for a child with muscular dystrophy. Since then, firefighters across the nation have continued the tradition.
MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy, and education. MDA’s programs are funded almost entirely by individual private contributors. MDA maintains a network of 200 hospital-affiliated clinics to serve families living with any of 43 different neuromuscular diseases.
